Thank you for your interest in becoming a board member of the Vermont Education & Environmental Network! You can learn more about who our current board members are and the organizations they represent on the Board of Directors page.
Any Vermont Education & Environment Network member interested in driving our work forward around the state is encouraged to apply! If you aren’t a member yet, you can join anytime. Previous experience as a board member in any organization is not required.
We are especially interested in board member applicants who bring diverse lived experience and or experience with social and racial justice. Collaboration is the foundation of our network, and we’re looking for board members from around the state, especially outside Chittenden County who represent a variety of education and environmental sectors.
We welcome applicants in any stage of their career! Board members can be actively employed, in school, or retired. Possible board members might be or represent these individuals or industries: classroom teachers, outdoor educators, education administrators, program directors, natural resources, private or public education and or environment organizations, undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate students, afterschool professionals, summer camp professionals, education or environmental executives, and more!

Board members serve a 2 year-term, in that time board members are required to:
- Attend at least 9 out of our 12 monthly board meetings, virtually or in person to contribute your unique skills, perspective, and expertise to guide the leadership and decision making of the nonprofit organization as it serves the mission and membership. Approximately 1 hour/month
- Serve on one or more subcommittees and tend to the work of that committee. Approximately 2 hours/month
- Attend and represent the board at our webinars, workshops, events and gatherings. Approximately 1-2 hours/month
- Attend annual board retreats. Approximate time/year varies based on amount of in-state travel required, and timing of retreat. Typically this is a 1 day event, 1-2 times per year.
- Attend and represent Vermont Education & Environment Network board at annual or biannual state or regional conferences. Approximate time per year varies based on whether or not a conference is offered and where it is located.
- Help create and submit content to our social media pages. Approximately 1 hour/year
- Lead and/or assist in the planning of at least 1 webinar, workshop, event or gathering during the year. This entails selecting a theme and organizing the panelists or speakers. Approximately 2 hours of time for each event.
- Provide at least 1 blog post per year. Approximately 1-2 hours per blog post.
- Promote and publicize VT Education & Environment Network events, the membership drive, and call for new board members throughout the calendar year. Ongoing
What are the qualifications to be a board member?
- Be a member of the Vermont Education & Environment Network- if you aren’t a member, apply now!
- Interest in the work of the Vermont Education & Environment Network
- Expertise in a specific area that is beneficial to the board (ex: fundraising, leadership, marketing)
- Time and energy to devote to board duties such as monthly meetings, seasonal events and tasks outside meetings
- Interest and experience connecting with Vermont education and/or environmental professionals
- Familiarity with our national affiliate the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) and our regional affiliate New England Environmental Education Alliance (NEEEA)
How does the application process work?
