Stormwater Education Methods Series: Floating Islands - Using Green Infrastructure to Enhance Water Quality

  • 14 Sep 2020
  • 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Speaker: Dr. Becky Tharpe, Just Water Consulting, LLC

Stormwater ponds are everywhere. In fact, they are the most commonly used practice to manage stormwater runoff in the world. You have probably seen them lurking behind chain link fences in your neighborhood or just off the pavement in shopping plazas all over the country. Their goal is to protect water quality in streams and rivers, but it turns out, they don't work as well as we once thought. Using green infrastructure, there is a movement to improve the aesthetics, accessibility, and water treatment capacity of these ponds - and other infrastructural practices. This talk will introduce the problem of stormwater and the arc of our understanding of how to treat it. Then we'll explore new thinking and the integration of natural systems to enhance conventional infrastructural approaches - with beautiful effect. We'll dig into research and projects happening right here in Vermont to understand the opportunities and limitations of green infrastructure with an emphasis on Floating Treatment Wetlands.
